Beginning with the Corps of Discovery in 1804, government-sponsored soldiers and scientists ventured into the western country. In 1820, an expedition led by U.S. Army topographical engineer Stephen H. Long entered the Cache la Poudre River drainage. Later parties followed, crossing here before traveling along the river’s north bank toward the foothills.
