Explore Bear Island on a small-group Hoonah wildlife tour, with a guide helping you look for bears and other wildlife.

About this tour

Explore Bear Island on a small-group Hoonah wildlife tour, where brown bears roam among muskeg, berries, and old-growth forest. The area is known for a high concentration of bears, but sightings are never guaranteed.

Your guide draws on current bear movements, feeding habits, and the day’s temperature to choose places to look for wildlife. Along the way, take in views of Icy Strait and learn about the region and the Tlingit people. Keep your camera ready: other possible sightings include bald eagles, otters, beavers, mink, marten, red squirrels, ducks, seabirds, and Sitka black-tailed deer.

This four-hour Hoonah Bear Island wildlife tour includes a driver and guide, a local guide, and port pickup and drop-off. The meeting point is a five-minute walk from the cruise tender pier. Dress for changeable weather with layers and a waterproof outer layer, and wear shoes that can handle wet conditions. Join this small-group outing for a chance to experience the island’s wildlife and scenery with a knowledgeable guide.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. GetYourGuide rates it 4.03 from 659 reviews. We place that rating among all GetYourGuide ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Hoonah
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 2.5.
