Explore London Banqueting House, admire Rubens’s original ceiling paintings, and stand inside a landmark shaped by royal history.

About this tour

Step into centuries of royal spectacle and turbulent history at London Banqueting House, the remarkable survivor of the former Palace of Whitehall. Designed by Inigo Jones in 1622, this Jacobean landmark helped reshape English architecture. Inside, look up to see Sir Peter Paul Rubens’s celebrated ceiling canvases, commissioned by King Charles I and still displayed in their original home.

The hall also witnessed one of Britain’s most dramatic turning points. In 1649, Charles I walked beneath the ceiling created for his glory and stepped through a first-floor window to the scaffold outside, where he was executed before a London crowd. The palace around Banqueting House was later almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1698, leaving this magnificent structure as its sole survivor.

An admission ticket offers a close encounter with art, architecture, and royal history in the heart of the city. Visit London Banqueting House to see the room where these stories still meet.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.10 from 21 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in London
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 6.1.
