New York Harlem Gospel Music Walking Tour

Walk through Harlem’s church history and hear how gospel music grew from spiritual traditions into a defining sound of Black culture. On this New York Harlem Gospel Music Walking Tour, a licensed New York City-born guide leads you to nine landmark sites, including early Black Episcopal, Methodist, Pentecostal, and Baptist churches.

Explore the churches’ histories, their leaders, and their roles in the anti-slavery and civil rights movements. Along the way, trace gospel’s musical roots from the ring shout through spirituals and Protestant hymnals to gospel blues, now commonly known as gospel music. The tour is offered in English or French, with a portable video and audio system to support the experience.

The walk concludes at a church service, where you can listen to a live gospel choir in its community setting. This is a real service, not a concert. Take the #2 or #3 train to 135th Street and walk north on Malcolm X Boulevard/Lenox to meet your guide. Discover Harlem’s history and music firsthand on this New York Harlem Gospel Music Walking Tour.
