Trace French art’s bold rebels, from Delacroix and Ingres to Van Gogh and Gauguin, on a private English-language Musée d'Orsay tour.

About this tour

Step into the artistic upheavals that transformed French painting on a private Paris Musée d'Orsay guided tour. Over two hours, an English-speaking guide traces the rule breakers and bold ideas that first challenged convention and later won admirers around the world.

Begin with the rival artistic worlds of Delacroix and Ingres in the 1840s, then encounter works by Courbet, Manet, Monet, and Cézanne. Along the way, learn why the Impressionist revolution unsettled the French public and how it changed the art of its time. The story leads to the distinctive visions of Van Gogh and Gauguin, once tempestuous friends. The group is limited to six, with headphones and audio receivers provided. Your guide, an Irish artist and specialist decorator who has worked as a Paris museum guide for 10 years, brings a personal perspective to the collection.

Admission is not included, so arrange your museum ticket online before the visit. Meet by the steps of the Musée de la Légion d'Honneur at Entrance 2, where your guide will be identifiable by a guide badge. Book this Paris Musée d'Orsay guided tour to see the museum through the eyes of the artists who broke its rules.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 1 review. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Paris
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.1. Top 49% in Paris means it ranks in the top 49% of tours in Paris by this score.
