Explore Castel Sant'Angelo with a private guide, admission, and luxury chauffeur service on a three-hour journey through Roman history.

About this tour

Step into centuries of Roman history on a private visit to Castel Sant'Angelo, a monumental landmark that began as the tomb of Emperor Hadrian and his family. Completed in 139 AD, it soon took on a military role and later became a place of refuge for popes during times of danger.

With a private professional guide, explore the castle and hear the stories behind its changing purpose. Learn about Pope Gregory I’s vision of St. Michael in 590, said to signal the end of a great epidemic, and spot the archangel’s statue crowning the building. Discover the passage that connected Castel Sant'Angelo with Vatican City, and how Pope Clement VII sought shelter here during the 1527 siege of Rome. Your experience includes admission, luxury transportation, and a private chauffeur for pickup and drop-off.

Choose this Rome Castel Sant'Angelo private tour for a more personal way to encounter one of the city’s most storied sites. Let the guide bring its layers of history to life as you explore.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 2 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.2. Top 40% in Rome means it ranks in the top 40% of tours in Rome by this score.
