Explore St. Peter’s Basilica with a private art historian, then climb the dome stairs for panoramic views across Rome.

About this tour

See Rome from above and explore one of its most remarkable landmarks on a private St. Peter’s Basilica tour with a dome climb. A private art historian guides you through the basilica’s Renaissance art and architecture, then leads you up the dome stairs for panoramic views across the city. The 90-minute experience also includes the grottoes when they are open.

Meet your guide at Largo del Colonnato, 5, by the first columns of the Colonnade, and arrive five minutes before departure. Security checks are required and can involve a wait; this tour does not skip the line. The dome climb is by stairs only, so comfortable shoes and moderate fitness are recommended. Dress with knees and shoulders covered, and bring identification that matches the name on your booking.

Closures can affect access to the dome terrace, grottoes, or parts of the basilica. If bad weather closes the terrace, you can opt for a partial refund and visit the basilica and grottoes, or cancel for a full refund. Book this Rome St. Peter’s Basilica tour for an intimate look at its art, architecture, and unforgettable city views.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.80 from 44 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.0.
