Hear the bold stories of Rome’s queens, empresses, artists, and courtesans on a 150-minute small-group walking tour.

About this tour

Rome’s history is often told through emperors and warriors, but the city’s women shaped its destiny with intelligence, ambition, and force of will. On this 150-minute Rome Women Who Shaped Rome Walking Tour, hear the stories that history left in the shadows.

Meet your guide in Piazza del Popolo, then explore the lives of queens who gave up their thrones, empresses who wielded power, and artists who challenged the limits placed on them. Along the way, discover tales of a woman called the “She-Pope,” a figure feared by emperors and killed by her own son, a sharp-witted courtesan, and a duchess whose family name became legend. An expert storytelling guide leads a small group of no more than 15, bringing each account of ambition, betrayal, love, and resilience to life.

Accessible throughout, this Rome Women Who Shaped Rome Walking Tour offers a fresh perspective on the people behind the city’s familiar history. Join the walk and meet the women who helped make Rome.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 7 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.5. Top 24% in Rome means it ranks in the top 24% of tours in Rome by this score.
