Watch sparks fly and shape an Alaskan wildlife design into a one-of-a-kind steel keepsake in Sitka’s working CNC workshop.
About this tour
Turn a piece of steel into a keepsake inspired by Alaska during this hands-on Sitka Metal Art Class. At The Salty Sitkan, you’ll step inside a working CNC workshop and watch sparks fly as a plasma cutter shapes a flat metal animal blank.
With guidance from Mike, a third-generation high school shop teacher with a decade of teaching experience, you’ll learn techniques for transforming steel into a distinctive work of art. Choose from designs inspired by Alaskan wildlife, including sockeye, coho, or king salmon, halibut, grizzly bears, Dungeness crabs, bald eagles, and Pacific octopuses. Tools for your project are provided, and transportation from the cruise ship terminal is available via Sitka Shuttle Company.
This 150-minute Sitka Metal Art Class offers a creative way to connect with local craft and take home a personal memento. Shipping your finished project is available for an additional fee. Book your workshop visit and make something uniquely Alaskan.

How this score is calculated
This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 87 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.
How the score works and rating distribution in Sitka
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 9.0. Top 6% in Sitka means it ranks in the top 6% of tours in Sitka by this score.
