Follow lantern light through downtown Traverse City for local history, reported hauntings, and an optional ghost-hunting introduction.
About this tour
As lantern light settles over downtown, Traverse City’s past takes on a mysterious edge. On this 90-minute outdoor walking tour, local guides pair the city’s history and architecture with stories of reported hauntings and spirits.
Follow the route through downtown locations as you hear tales rooted in local lore. The walk ends on the grounds of Traverse City’s first cemetery, where the graves were relocated long ago. In the final 5 minutes, you can try an optional introduction to ghost hunting using provided equipment. This is a storytelling tour with history at its heart, not a cemetery visit or a dedicated paranormal investigation.
Traverse City Historical Ghost Lantern Tour is led by experienced local guides and is suitable for all fitness levels. The route is wheelchair accessible, and infants and small children can ride in a stroller. Meet outside Higher Self Bookstore 10 minutes before departure; the location has no public restroom. The final stretch passes through a wooded park where insects may be present.
Bring your curiosity and follow the lanterns into Traverse City’s stories, both historical and haunted.

How this score is calculated
This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.83 from 147 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.
How the score works and rating distribution in Traverse City
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.3.
