Explore African American history and culture with a private guide on a two-hour visit to Washington DC’s National Museum.

About this tour

Explore the National Museum of African American History and Culture on a private Washington DC African American history museum tour. Meet your guide at the museum entrance and spend two hours discovering stories that illuminate African American life, history, and culture.

Your guide leads your group through key highlights, connecting the experiences and contributions represented in the museum with the global influences that have shaped them. The museum, established by an Act of Congress in 2003, is the only national museum devoted exclusively to documenting African American life, history, and culture. Its collection includes more than 36,000 artifacts.

A private guide keeps the visit focused on your group, offering context and perspective as you explore. This is an independent tour, not an official Smithsonian tour; the guide's views may not represent those of the Smithsonian. Meet at the museum entrance 15 minutes before the start, then discover the stories behind the exhibits on this Washington DC African American history museum tour.

How this score is calculated

This tour scores 4.25 on Viator and 4.74 on GetYourGuide. Ratings on these sites cluster near the top of the 5-star scale, so we compare each one with all other ratings on the same site before combining them.

How the score works and rating distribution in Washington DC
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.2. Top 45% in Washington DC means it ranks in the top 45% of tours in Washington DC by this score.
