Explore the Sun by day and the stars by night on a guided Maunakea outing with dinner, jackets, and hotel pickup included.
About this tour
Trade the familiar night sky for a closer look at the stars on the Maunakea Stellar Explorer from Kona. This 390-minute outing pairs nighttime astronomical observing with safe daytime solar viewing, guided by staff with deep experience in astronomy and observatory work.
The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off, dinner, bottled water, and jackets to help you stay comfortable. Your guide leads the observing experience and shares knowledge shaped by years of work in Hawaii’s astronomy community. The itinerary does not visit the Maunakea summit or Visitor Center, in deference to Native Hawaiian concerns.

How this score is calculated
This tour scores 3.78 on Viator and 4.27 on GetYourGuide. Ratings on these sites cluster near the top of the 5-star scale, so we compare each one with all other ratings on the same site before combining them.
How the score works and rating distribution in Big Island of Hawaii
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 4.1.
