Explore Uptown Charlotte’s independence, gold rush, and ghost stories on a self-guided 2-mile audio walk at your own pace.

About this tour

Walk through Uptown Charlotte and uncover the stories behind the Queen City’s independence, gold rush, and rise as a banking center. This self-guided Charlotte walking tour begins at Independence Square, where you’ll hear about North Carolina’s early, controversial push for independence.

Follow a 2-mile route to Old Settlers Cemetery, where Revolutionary War heroes are buried, and learn how the state’s first gold rush led to the founding of the US Branch Mint. Along the way, hear the ghost story connected to the Dunhill Hotel, pass a Hunger Games filming location, and see the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and Mint Museum Uptown. The walk ends at Romare Bearden Park.

Narrated by actor Phil Biedron, this Charlotte self-guided audio tour plays through the VoiceMap app. Download the audio, maps, and geodata for offline use, then explore at your own pace, pausing or restarting whenever you like. Bring your smartphone and headphones, and set out to discover the history and unexpected tales woven into Uptown’s streets.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 3.83 from 36 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Charlotte
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 5.5.
