Walk Mackinac Island’s West Bluff, admire eleven Victorian cottages, and hear the stories of the families who built them.
About this tour
Explore the grand Victorian homes of Mackinac Island’s West Bluff on a self-guided walking tour that brings the shoreline’s history to life. Starting at the Walter C. Newberry Cottage, just beyond the Grand Hotel, follow the bluff past eleven distinctive cottages, from Queen Anne turrets to shingle-style facades and broad wraparound verandas.
As you walk, hear how lumber barons and meat-packers built summer retreats far from the heat and grime of post-Civil War cities. Discover the governors, immigrants, family dynasties, and business partnerships woven into the neighborhood’s story, along with the competition for leases on National Park land that once began at just $25 a year. The app provides audio, maps, and geodata, with offline access so you can explore at your own pace. Bring your own smartphone and headphones; transportation, food, and drink are not included.
Take the Mackinac Island West Bluff Cottages tour to see the architecture up close and uncover the people behind these remarkable homes. Download the app before you arrive and begin your walk at the Grand Hotel.

How this score is calculated
This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 1.00 from 1 review. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.
How the score works and rating distribution in Mackinaw City
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.0.
