Explore how Haussmann’s sweeping 17-year redesign transformed Paris on a private, art historian-led tour of the city’s urban history.
About this tour
See how Paris became a modern capital on this private Paris Haussmannian reconstruction tour, led by a professional art historian. In just 17 years, an ambitious and deeply disruptive urban transformation replaced much of the medieval city with broad new avenues and a modern cityscape.
As you explore, your guide traces the changes that reshaped Paris and considers their lasting impact on architecture, politics, industry, consumer culture, and everyday urban life. The story reveals both the scale of the reconstruction and its cultural cost, offering a fresh perspective on the city’s familiar streets. Meet your guide in front of the Ritz hotel entrance, where they will be carrying a red canvas tote bag. The 120-minute tour is wheelchair accessible, and a live English-speaking guide brings the history into focus.

How this score is calculated
This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 4 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.
How the score works and rating distribution in Paris
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.3. Top 31% in Paris means it ranks in the top 31% of tours in Paris by this score.
