Travel from Rome to Assisi and Orvieto for sacred basilicas, a Gothic cathedral, and the remarkable depths of St. Patrick’s Well.

About this tour

Leave Rome behind for a private day among Umbria’s olive groves, hill towns, and sacred landmarks. Your driver picks you up at your hotel and takes you to Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. Visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and its revered Porziuncola, then explore the basilicas of St. Francis. Access to the Upper Basilica is always allowed, while entry to the Lower Basilica and crypt depends on availability. With your tour assistant, you can also try to visit the church preserving the body of Blessed Carlo Acutis; admission is free, but access depends on attendance and waiting times.

Continue to Orvieto to see its Gothic cathedral, then descend into St. Patrick’s Well, a remarkable 16th-century structure with a double spiral staircase reaching 54 meters deep. Private transportation, an air-conditioned vehicle, and Wi-Fi on board make the 12-hour journey comfortable, with a return to Rome scheduled for late afternoon. Please note that St. Patrick’s Well is not wheelchair accessible.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 3 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.3. Top 35% in Rome means it ranks in the top 35% of tours in Rome by this score.
