Explore Castel Sant’Angelo with a guide, hear its legends, and admire frescoes, papal apartments, and angel sculptures.

About this tour

Step into the layered history of Rome at Castel Sant’Angelo, the monumental former mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. On this 120-minute guided visit, follow the story of the building as it became a castle, and hear the legend of Archangel Michael appearing above it in 590, sheathing his sword as the plague ended. The vision gave the fortress its present name.

Explore the castle’s corridors and papal apartments, taking in frescoes and sculptures of angels by Bernini, Raggi, and Morelli. An English- or Italian-speaking guide leads the visit, with headsets included. Admission fees are included, so you can focus on the stories and details that bring the site to life. The tour meets on Ponte Sant’Angelo, in front of the castle.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.83 from 101 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.3. Top 35% in Rome means it ranks in the top 35% of tours in Rome by this score.
