Explore the Colosseum from outside, then follow Ancient Rome’s story through the Forum, Trajan’s Column, and Trajan’s Markets.

About this tour

See ancient Rome come alive on a 90-minute exterior tour of the Colosseum and the landmarks that shaped the city. Your guide sets the scene outside the amphitheater, sharing how Roman engineers built it and how emperors and roaring crowds filled its stands. This Rome Colosseum exterior tour focuses on the stories and architecture without entering the monument; admission tickets are not included.

Continue along Via dei Fori Imperiali to explore the history of the Roman Forum, the Forum of Julius Caesar, and Palatine Hill. The tour also takes in Trajan’s Column and includes a guided visit to Trajan’s Markets. Headsets and radios help you follow the commentary as you move between sites. The route offers a broad introduction to Ancient Rome, with wheelchair-accessible areas and surfaces. Meet at the My City Tour office, and bring identification that matches the names supplied at booking if you plan to enter the Colosseum or Roman Forum separately.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 3.17 from 6 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 6.7.
