Explore Norchia’s Etruscan tombs, wooded acropolis, and ancient Cava Buia on a 7 km trek with a packed lunch of local specialties.
About this tour
Discover Norchia, a wild archaeological landscape often called “the Little Italian Petra,” on a trekking excursion from Rome. Its dramatic Etruscan rock tombs rise above a deep canyon, while woodland shelters traces of a medieval city.
Explore the necropolis before descending into the Acqualta River canyon and climbing through the woods to the Etruscan-Roman acropolis. The route also reaches the remains of the 12th-century Di Vico castle and follows Cava Buia, an ancient road carved through tuff for more than 400 meters. Along the way, learn about Norchia’s history as part of the Etruscan world connected to Tarquinia. A packed lunch featuring typical local products, water, and wine adds a taste of the region to the day.
This 7 km walk combines archaeological discoveries with rugged scenery. Wear suitable outdoor clothing and trekking shoes, then set out to experience the remarkable layers of history at the Necropolis of Norchia.

How this score is calculated
This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 3 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.
How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.3. Top 35% in Rome means it ranks in the top 35% of tours in Rome by this score.
