Visit Rome’s four Papal Major Basilicas with an expert guide, enter their Holy Doors, and travel between sites in an air-conditioned vehicle.

About this tour

Step through centuries of pilgrimage on a Rome Papal Basilicas tour, visiting the four churches recognized as the city’s Major Basilicas. The tradition of pilgrimage to these sacred sites dates to 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII encouraged pilgrims to visit and pass through their Holy Doors.

With an expert guide, visit St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. Mary Major, and the Arch-Basilica of St. John Lateran. Enter each basilica through its Holy Door and discover the places that have drawn pilgrims for generations. An air-conditioned vehicle connects the sites, making it easier to experience all four during this five-hour tour. St. Peter’s Basilica admission is included.

Meet at the obelisk in the center of St. Peter’s Square and look for the guide’s orange sign with a lion’s head. If you have mobility difficulties, contact the provider in advance; the tour is not recommended for travelers with mobility difficulties. Choose this Rome Papal Basilicas tour for a guided journey through the city’s enduring religious heritage.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.70 from 20 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 6.8.
