Travel from Rome to Pompeii in a private Mercedes, then explore the ancient ruins independently before returning to your accommodation.

About this tour

Leave Rome behind for a private day trip to Pompeii, where ancient streets and archaeological remains offer a vivid glimpse into life before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. An English-speaking driver collects you from your accommodation and takes you south in a private Mercedes vehicle. The drive from Rome takes about 2.5 hours, with transfer times varying according to traffic.

At Pompeii, spend around two hours exploring the archaeological site independently. Admission tickets are not included and are payable onsite, and a licensed guide is not provided. Your driver can comment on attractions from inside the vehicle but cannot give explanations while you are outside it. After your visit, you can stop for lunch or a snack at your own expense before returning to Rome. Hotel pickup and drop-off make the journey straightforward, while the private vehicle gives you a comfortable way to reach the ruins.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.93 from 14 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.5. Top 23% in Rome means it ranks in the top 23% of tours in Rome by this score.
