Meet shepherds, milk sheep, and make cheese on a private day trip from Rome, with local lunch and visits to Abruzzo landmarks.

About this tour

Leave Rome behind for a hands-on day in Abruzzo National Park, where mountain pastures and beech forests set the scene for traditional shepherding. Meet local shepherds, accompany their sheep to graze, try milking them, and learn how to make cheese. A private driver-guide takes you between the countryside stops in an air-conditioned minivan, with pickup and drop-off at your Rome accommodation.

Pause for lunch featuring typical local products, wine, and drinks, then explore the picturesque town of Castel del Monte and Rocca Calascio, a castle featured in films and television series including The American and Ladyhawke. If weather and timing allow, the day may also include a visit to the spectacular Stiffe Caves. Bottled water is provided, and the private format makes it easy to enjoy the changing landscapes and local traditions at your own pace. Choose this Rome Shepherding and Cheese-Making Tour for a memorable taste of rural Abruzzo.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 4 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.3. Top 31% in Rome means it ranks in the top 31% of tours in Rome by this score.
