Explore St. Peter’s Basilica before the crowds, climb its dome for Rome views, and visit the crypts with an expert guide.

About this tour

See St. Peter’s Basilica before the crowds arrive on an early-morning Rome St. Peter’s Basilica Dome and Crypt Tour. With a guide, begin at the dome: take the elevator to its first level, admire the mosaics and the view into the Basilica, then climb the spiral staircase to the summit for sweeping views over the Eternal City.

Back inside, explore the Basilica’s highlights, including Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s canopy, before descending to the crypts to see Saint Peter’s Tomb and the burial places of hundreds of popes. The guided visit lasts three hours, and you can stay in the Basilica afterward. Dome-climb tickets and on-site assistance are included; hotel transfers, food, and drinks are not.

Meet at Largo del Colonnato 5 at least 20 minutes before departure, dress to meet the Basilica’s entry requirements, and allow time for security. Choose this Rome St. Peter’s Basilica Dome and Crypt Tour for a close look at its celebrated art, sacred spaces, and city views.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.83 from 6 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.1.
