Climb St. Peter’s Dome, explore the Papal Grottoes, and discover the history of Rome’s iconic basilica with a licensed local guide.

About this tour

Explore one of Rome’s most remarkable landmarks on a guided visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Papal Grottoes, and the dome. A licensed local guide brings the basilica’s history and art to life as you take in its grand interior and discover the underground grottoes, where tradition places the tomb of Saint Peter.

Then climb St. Peter’s Dome, Michelangelo’s celebrated Renaissance masterpiece and a defining feature of the Roman skyline. Personal headsets help you follow the guide’s commentary, even when the basilica is busy. The experience lasts 180 minutes and meets near Ottaviano Metro A station. The dome climb involves physical exertion, so a moderate fitness level is recommended; it is not advised for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.

See Rome from a new perspective and uncover the stories beneath its most famous church on this St. Peter’s Basilica Dome Climb and Underground Tour.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 1 review. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.1. Top 48% in Rome means it ranks in the top 48% of tours in Rome by this score.
