Enter St. Peter's Basilica early, climb toward the dome's summit, and explore papal grottoes with an expert Vatican guide.

About this tour

See St. Peter's Basilica before the crowds arrive, then climb above the rooftops for a remarkable view across Rome. This 150-minute guided tour begins near St. Peter's Square, where you meet your expert Vatican guide before entering the basilica as it opens to the public.

Take the lift partway up St. Peter's Dome, then choose whether to enjoy the terrace or continue up 320 steps to the summit. From the top, take in Vatican City and Rome as your guide points out landmarks across the city and beyond. The tour then descends to the basilica's lower level, where the grottoes known as the “Vatacombs” hold papal crypts and sculpted effigies. Along the way, admire the basilica's celebrated art and architecture and gain a fresh perspective on its history.

The dome climb requires moderate exertion, so bring water and wear comfortable clothing that meets the basilica's dress code. Join this early Rome St. Peter's Dome Climb and Basilica Tour for an intimate look above and below one of the city's most iconic landmarks.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.80 from 178 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.1.
