Explore Rome’s hidden history on a 3-hour guided tour, with archaeological insight and stories that bring the city’s past to life.

About this tour

Step beneath the surface of the Eternal City and discover the stories hidden below its famous streets. On this Rome Underground and Piazzas Tour, a knowledgeable guide brings the city’s past to life as you explore important sites and hear how Rome’s history shaped the landmarks above ground. Many guides are archaeologists, so you can ask questions and gain deeper insight along the way.

The 180-minute experience includes a visit to the Pantheon when access is available. Dress with shoulders and knees covered to enter. Stadio di Domiziano is temporarily closed and is not part of the visit until further notice. On Sundays, meet at the National Academy of San Luca in Piazza Accademia di S. Luca, 77. Arrive on time, as late arrivals cannot join and are not eligible for a refund. A live English-speaking guide leads the tour; transportation and gratuities are not included.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.58 from 64 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 6.0.
