About this tour

Uncover the stories and striking design of St. Peter’s Square with a self-guided audio tour through the heart of Vatican City. Start at the square, open the TouringBee app, and follow an offline GPS route at your own pace.

Listen to 23 recordings narrated by a professional historian as you take in Bernini’s colonnade, Michelangelo’s dome and Pietà, and Bernini’s baldachin above the papal altar. Along the way, hear about the Vatican’s history as a state and spiritual center, the popes who shaped its story, and the Swiss Guards’ distinctive uniforms. The app’s map and landmark illustrations help you navigate and identify what you see, and you can listen even while queuing at the basilica. One year of access lets you return to the tour in your preferred language.

This Rome Vatican walking tour is self-guided, so bring your smartphone and headphones and explore on your own schedule. Download the app, activate your purchase, and discover the square through stories that bring its landmarks to life.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.00 from 9 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 6.6.
