Explore Salem’s colonial roots, maritime past, and 1692 witch trial history on a guided 120-minute walk through Witch City.

About this tour

Discover the stories beneath Salem’s famous reputation on a guided walk through the heart of Witch City. The town’s name comes from the Hebrew word for peace, a striking contrast to its enduring association with the 1692 witch trials.

On this 120-minute Salem Dark History Tour, a professional guide shares thoroughly researched history that reaches beyond the trials. Learn about Salem as an important colonial town and seaside community, shaped by its maritime past, Puritan work ethic, commitment to education, and close-knit residents. Along the way, hear how the witch trials became part of the city’s story and explore the history that surrounds them.

Meet your guide outside Salem Five Savings Bank and look for a U.S. Ghost Adventures T-shirt. The tour is wheelchair accessible, and public transportation is available nearby. Come ready to explore Salem’s layered past and see the city through more than its most familiar legend.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.72 from 68 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Salem
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 6.7.
