Explore Salem’s maritime past on a costumed walking tour filled with pirate stories, historic wharves, and seven downtown stops.

About this tour

Before witches made Salem famous, its harbor drew pirates, merchants, and privateers from around the world. On this one-hour Salem Pirate Walking Tour, follow the city’s maritime story through seven stops spanning historic wharves and downtown streets.

A costumed guide brings real characters to life, including Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy, Captain William Kidd, Rachel Wall, and Pedro Gilbert. Hear how Salem’s privateers helped shape American history, how pirate lore influenced Nathaniel Hawthorne, and how piracy connects to the Salem Witch Trials. The outdoor route pairs darker sea tales with the people and events behind the legends, offering a vivid look at a side of Salem beyond its witch-trial fame.

Join the Salem Pirate Walking Tour to explore the city’s harbor heritage and hear the stories that still echo through its streets. Meet your guide at Charlotte Forten Park, near the water.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 1 review. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Salem
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.1. Top 39% in Salem means it ranks in the top 39% of tours in Salem by this score.
