Explore Salem’s maritime past and 1692 through phone-based clues, with three self-guided mystery games for groups to choose from.
About this tour
Trace Salem’s layered history one clue at a time on a self-guided mystery game played entirely on your phone. Choose a short family-friendly loop, follow Nathaniel Hawthorne through the town he could not leave, or take the Deep Dive into the streets and waterfront stories of 1692.
Each game leads you through public spaces, past statues, tablets, and memorials that reveal the city’s maritime wealth and its infamous witch trials. Solve puzzles as a group and explore at your own pace. Two games begin at the bandstand in Salem Common; the intermediate game starts near Essex Street and Washington Square West, outside the Hawthorne Hotel. The Deep Dive finishes about a mile west of downtown. No guide, reservation, or museum admission is needed, and one purchase gives your whole group access to the game’s clues and story.
Bring a smartphone and mobile data, open the link in your voucher, and set out to see Salem with fresh eyes. Choose your Salem mystery game and start exploring.

How this score is calculated
This tour has no TourTruth score yet: Viator doesn't show a usable rating for it. It gets a score as soon as a provider lists one.
How the score works
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10. Tours without a usable provider rating are not scored.
