Explore Sutro Baths’ dramatic coastal ruins and uncover the Victorian vision, ocean-filled pools, and 1966 fire that shaped this San Francisco landmark.

About this tour

Perched above the Pacific at Lands End, the concrete remains of Sutro Baths invite you to imagine San Francisco’s Gilded Age. This self-guided walking tour explores the story of the vast indoor swimming complex once envisioned by millionaire Adolph Sutro as a grand Victorian-era “Crystal Palace.”

With the Pintours App, follow the history of the pools and learn how ocean water filled the complex. The route also reveals the mysterious 1966 fire that left the striking ruins visitors see today. Along the way, take in the dramatic coastal setting and bring a camera to capture the weathered concrete against the Pacific. The tour lasts 120 minutes; meals are not included.

Discover the stories behind this iconic shoreline landmark at your own pace. Start your San Francisco Sutro Baths Self-Guided Tour with curiosity, and see how ambition, the ocean, and fire shaped one of the city’s most memorable ruins.

How this score is calculated

This tour has no TourTruth score yet: Viator doesn't show a usable rating for it. It gets a score as soon as a provider lists one.

How the score works
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10. Tours without a usable provider rating are not scored.
