Tucson Dark Sky Discovery Night Program 4.5 hr

Watch the desert sky turn to a field of stars during the Tucson Dark Sky Discovery Night Program at Kitt Peak National Observatory, nearly 7,000 feet above sea level. This guided evening pairs astronomy exhibits and expert insight with telescope viewing beneath Arizona’s dark skies.

Begin at the Visitor Center, where exhibits introduce the observatory and the science of astronomy. After a light meal, your guide will help you identify stars and constellations. As night settles in, head outdoors to observe the sky through a variety of telescopes, then enter an observatory dome to view deep-space objects through a professional telescope. The small-group format, with up to 14 guests per guide, offers a more personal experience. Programs are scheduled away from the full moon for optimal stargazing.

The Tucson Dark Sky Discovery Night Program lasts about 4.5 hours and includes observatory entry, a guide-led program, telescope viewing, and a turkey, vegetarian, or gluten-free sandwich. Transportation to Kitt Peak is not included. The experience requires walking between telescopes and climbing stairs, and it is not ADA accessible. Dress warmly and wear closed-toe walking shoes; visitors from outside the U.S. should bring passports for the Border Patrol checkpoint on Arizona State Route 86.
