Bend Lava Cave Tour 3.5 hr

Step beneath Bend’s high desert into a quiet world shaped by ancient volcanic flows. On this Bend Lava Cave Tour, a naturalist guide leads you through wild lava tubes, sharing the geology and natural and cultural history of Central Oregon along the way.

Travel from the tour office to the caves, then gear up with a helmet and headlamp for an underground exploration. There are no paved paths or installed lights, so you can experience the caves in their natural state. The mostly level, sandy floor has rocky, uneven sections, with optional scrambling and crawling in some areas. Look for signs of cave life and learn how these delicate ecosystems endure. The drive also offers views of ponderosa pine high desert and the Cascade Range. The underground portion lasts about two hours, while provider listings give total tour durations of three to four hours.

Bring sturdy closed-toe shoes, warm layers for the year-round 45°F cave temperature, and water. Meet at the Bend tour office before setting out. Join a Bend Lava Cave Tour for a close-up look at the region’s volcanic landscape, guided by someone who knows its hidden details.
