Hear Charleston’s history from a Gullah Geechee guide on a 60-minute tour exploring the slave trade, local stories, and enduring culture.
About this tour
Hear Charleston’s past through the voice of a Gullah Geechee guide on this 60-minute tour. Led by Chief Godfrey Gullah Jack, the experience explores the history of the Gullah Geechee people and Charleston’s slave trade, sharing stories often left out of conventional accounts.
As you travel through the city, learn about enslaved people, master craftsmen, and influential landowners whose lives and labor shaped Charleston. You’ll also hear the Gullah language spoken by a native voice and discover how Gullah Geechee culture has endured across generations. Rather than simply pointing out landmarks, this guided experience connects local history with stories of resilience and cultural legacy.
Meet at Gullah Jack's Soul Food on King Street and look for the black Mercedes Sprinter van. Choose this Charleston Black History Tour for a thoughtful, locally led perspective on the people and history behind the city.

How this score is calculated
This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.83 from 6 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.
How the score works and rating distribution in Charleston
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.1.
