About this tour
New York’s subway does more than move millions of people each day: it helped build the city above ground. On this New York Subway History Tour, ride the historic 42nd Street Shuttle and trace how transportation transformed Midtown Manhattan into a global center of business, entertainment, and commerce.
Meet at the information booth beneath the clock in Grand Central Terminal, then travel toward Times Square as your guide connects the subway’s story to the streets and landmarks around you. Along the way, discover the history behind Broadway, the Diamond District, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Learn how moving people through the city helped generate economic activity and shape the skyline New Yorkers recognize today.

How this score is calculated
This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 5.00 from 2 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.
How the score works and rating distribution in New York City
- Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
- Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
- Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
- The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 7.2. Top 42% in New York City means it ranks in the top 42% of tours in New York City by this score.
