Climb 281 steps for sweeping Rome views on a private, skip-the-line tour of St. Peter's Basilica with an art historian guide.

About this tour

Climb above the rooftops of Rome on a private visit to St. Peter's Basilica and its iconic dome. This two-hour Rome Dome Climb and St. Peter's Basilica Private Tour pairs remarkable art and history with a memorable view from one of the city's highest points.

Meet your guide at the obelisk in St. Peter's Square, then explore the basilica and hear the stories behind its celebrated works of art. Climb 281 steps to the top of the dome, where your guide can point out Rome's landmarks from a bird's-eye perspective. A professional art historian leads the private tour, and guaranteed skip-the-line access helps you spend less time waiting and more time taking in the setting.

Dress modestly for entry: knees and shoulders must be covered. Papal events can prompt last-minute closures, so access to the basilica or other Vatican areas may change; your guide may offer an alternative focused on the Vatican Museums. Choose this Rome Dome Climb and St. Peter's Basilica Private Tour for an intimate way to see the city from above and discover the stories within.

How this score is calculated

This score is based on one provider. Viator rates it 4.50 from 10 reviews. We place that rating among all Viator ratings and weight it by its review count. If the tour is found on another provider later, both ratings are combined.

How the score works and rating distribution in Rome
  • Each provider rating is turned into a percentile: the share of that provider's ratings it beats, weighted by review counts.
  • Listings on different providers are combined in proportion to their review counts.
  • Tours with few reviews are pulled toward the average until more reviews come in, so a handful of perfect reviews can't top the list.
  • The result is shown from 0 to 10: this tour scores 6.7.
